On The Translator's Subjectivity And Its Embodiments In The Translation Of Three Kingdoms

Translation has been a human activity over two thousand years and has made great contributions to the communication and development of mankind. But compared with its long history, people's understanding about translation and their studies on the nature and the law of translation are far from comprehensive and exhaustive. For many years, translation theorists have never stopped their research of the translation issues, among which the importance of the translator in the translation process is one of the fundamental. As for the role of the translator in the process of translation, translation theorists and scholars have expressed various ideas in both Chinese and Western translation history. But what in common in their opinions is that the traditional idea is mainly concerned with what the ideal translator should do and what norms the translator should adhere to, but it ignores the subjective status of the translator as an individual and thus ignores the fact that translation will inevitably bear the translator's subjectivity.This paper aims at discussing the translator's subjectivity in literary translation from the perspective of Skopostheorie and elaborates the embodiments of the translator's subjectivity in the translated text with an analysis of the English translation of Three Kingdoms. The thesis points out that the nature of literary translation is an intentional and purposeful cross-cultural communication and the translator is the subject of translation. Due to the different ways of living, different geographical environments and different customs and traditions of the different nations, the translation of cross-cultural factors will inevitably calls for the creativity of the translator.
