| Buddhism, especially Chinese Chan Buddhism, with its everlasting vitality and wide adaptability, has been offering an influential and effective way for calming, purifying and enlightening one's mind.This thesis is a study of Wangwei's poetry and his Buddhist belief. Wangwei lived in Tang Dynasty at its zenith, who was deeply influenced by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, particularly Buddhism. With "Emptiness" and "changeability" as the Buddhist nature and connotation, through his Chan poetry, we know the Chan wisdom and the Buddhist philosophical system itself. The thesis also attempts to discuss the synthetic idea of the "Oneness of Man and Heaven", which is equal to the Indian philosophical idea "Seva-nagri" (it means the universe and I are one and the same). Wangwei, as a Zenist, the realm of his thought endows us with profound mind to have an insight into the universe and nature, as well discern the truth of our life. Finally, the full text also tries to introduce a way which focuses on the purification of one's own mind in the hope of bringing a better development of our modern society for generations to come.The thesis is composed of three parts: Preface, Main text and Conclusion.The preface describes the motivation and aim of the thesis.The main text includes four chapters:The first chapter introduces Wangwei's lifetime and his Buddhist belief.
