On Chinese Translation Of Shakespeare's Hamlet From The Literary Stylistic Perspective

William Shakespeare (1564-1616), widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all times, occupies a unique position in world literature. Throughout his life, he not only wrote splendid long poems and sonnets, but also left the world 37plays, which cover a wide range of subjects and themes, and create imaginative visions of pathos and mirth. Among those plays, Hamlet is generally regarded as the summit of his art. It skillfully displays dramatic conflicts and rich characterization, and demonstrates Shakespeare's genius of expressing philosophical ideas in English and his shrew observation of life and human nature. So far it has transcended national barriers to different readers in many different languages. For over eighty years in China alone, more than ten Chinese versions have been produced. Among them, Zhu Shenghao's and Fang Ping's versions of Hamlet are especially outstanding. The former has enjoyed its popularity for over 50 years in China for its smooth, natural and prosaic style, while the latter based on the past research has brought new impetus to the translation of Shakespeare in the 21st century. All these efforts have contributed to the popularization of Hamlet and Shakespeare in China as well as the development of the translation studies. With the aim of exploring the literary significance of Hamlet and the problems emerging from the efforts of translators, this thesis will adopt literary stylistics to analyze both the original and the Chinese versions. Besides introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into four chapters.The introduction gives a short literature review of the existing researches on Shakespeare and briefs the theme and the basic structure of this thesis.Chapter one introduces Shakespeare and Hamlet from three aspects: a short account of the dramatist, an introduction of Hamlet and its textural characteristics, and a brief history of translation of Hamlet in China.Chapter Two is the theoretic basis for the stylistic analysis of Hamlet in the...
