| Thomas Hardy, a great British writer, distinguishes himself with his unique writing style. The Return of the Native, as one of his masterpieces, reveals the main artistic achievement of Hardy, which not only exhibits changes of emotions and fate by means of scenery depiction, but also displays distinct aesthetic value through the acoustic and picturesque beauty. In the study of literary translation, translators have been attaching greater attention to convey artistry or literary grace of the source text in target language. Translators select translation strategies for keeping the aesthetic nuance of the source text so as to achieve aesthetic affinity among readers. Since "understanding" is the premise of translation strategies, Hermeneutics, as a science about understanding and interpretation, has an indissoluble bond with Translation Studies.By taking Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic theories as its theoretical basis, such as the concepts of "prejudice" and "fusion of horizons", this thesis carries out a tentative study on translation strategies in terms of aesthetic affinity. In translation, "prejudice" and "horizons" of both the translators and the readers will inevitably lead to the selectivity and introjection in their understanding. This thesis attempts to probe into the dynamic progression of aesthetic affinity in literary translation, to compare the similarities and the differences in the strategies adopted by different translators in the fulfillment of aesthetic affinity in two Chinese versions of The Return of the Native, to get insight into the relationship between aesthetic subjects and aesthetic objects by analyzing multiple factors in literary translation, such as horizons of aesthetic subjects (translators and readers) which are under the influence of culture, history and individual prejudice, and to study the feasibility and limitation of taking aesthetic affinity as one of the influential factors for translation strategies.
