On Two English Versions Of Customs Law Of The PRC

Customs Law of the People's Republic of China was adopted at the 19th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Sixth National People's Congress on January 22,1987 and went into effect as of July 1,1987. On July 8, 2000, "Decision Regarding the Amendment (of Customs Law of the People's Republic of China)" was passed at the 16th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress. The revised Customs Law plays an important role in promoting the development of the national economy, expanding exchanges with other countries in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, as well as ensuring the legal interests of the import and export enterprises, and regulating their management.In September 2000, China Legal Publishing House published the English version of Customs Law of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as VI); in June, the next year, China Customs Press published another English version of the Law translated by Department of Laws and Regulations, General Administration of Customs (hereinafter referred to as V2).With China's accession to the WTO and its deepening of reform, more and more legal documents have been or are being translated into English and introduced to the world. However, merits and deficiencies co-exist in the legal document translation at present.
