The water image is one of the most important images in literary history. Many scholars has researched and discussed its connotation and the significance.As China's oldest poetry collection, The Book of Poetry sees a lot of appearances of the water image. This article studies the types and reasons of the emotion expression of the works in Guofeng, or The Songs in 15 States, a chapter in the book.The character of beauty appreciation in those works is static beauty. The usage of water image can be divided into three types: representing morality when expressing ideals, representing obstruct or vagrancy when expressing mood and representing women or love when expressing love. When expressing ideals, the works in Guofeng often relate the transparency of the water to the good and bad aspects of human emotions. When expressing mood, the poets often have in mind their hometown, family or lover on the other side of the water; When expressing love, the poets feel vagrant as a result of traveling on the river without something to depend on.This article empathetically discusses the water image that accounts a large proportion in love poems in Guofeng.
