Inferiority Feelings Of College Student

Inferiority feelings involve a kind of negative mental experience, caused by improper self-evaluation; they indwell in the group of college students and influence their mental health severely. Social comparison is defined as the process of thinking about information about one or more other people in relation to the self; it greatly contributes to the inferiority feelings of college students. In China, the research about individual inferiority feelings and social comparison is limited, and that of taking the college students as the subjects, probing into their inferiority feelings based on the theory of social comparison is less. Inasmuch as the fact of the popularity of inferiority feelings and the deficiency of existed research, the study discussed the relationship between inferiority feelings and social comparison, from the point of the manner, frequency and dimensions of social comparison.After investigating 448 college students with self-made Questionnaire on Inferiority Feelings of College Student, Questionnaire on Upward Comparison of College Student and Questionnaire on Downward Comparison of College Student, the relationship between inferiority feelings and social comparison was explored. The results showed that:1. Questionnaire on Inferiority Feelings of College Student was of high reliability and fair validity. The questionnaire could be regarded as a kind of evaluative implement on the condition of inferiority feelings of college students. According to factor analysis, inferiority feelings of college students were composed of five dimensions named as self-apprehension feeling, self-detestation feeling, self-indignation feeling, self-helpless feeling and self-incredulity feeling.2. Questionnaire on Upward Comparison of College Student and Questionnaire on Downward Comparison of College Student were of high reliability and fair validity. According to factor analysis, the two questionnaires had four dimensions respectively. Concerning upward comparison, its four dimensions named as learning upward comparison, sociality upward comparison, family upward comparison, and body upward comparison. Regarding the four dimensions of downward comparison, they were named as learning downward comparison, sociality downward comparison, family downward comparison, and body downward comparison.3. The inferiority feelings of college students were in a low state. Because of the interaction of grade, sex and some factors of inferiority feelings of college student, the grade-level difference and sex difference were complicated.
