Writing is a dynamic and nonlinear process. In the past three decades, research on language writing has gone through a paradigm shift. The focus in the new paradigm shifted from the written product to the writing process. This study is set to describe and analyze both the writing processes of higher vocational college English learners while writing in their L1 (Chinese) and their EFL with the empirical investigation of the writing process of L1 and EFL respectively among them. To this end, the following issues are addressed: 1) what are the writing strategies Chinese students apply when writing in L1? 2) What are the writing strategies they apply when writing in English? 3) What are the similarities or differences between the writing strategies they apply when writing in L1 and EFL? The data used in this study was obtained using quantitative methodology and qualitative methodology. The questionnaire utilizing a five-point Likert scale and the data collected are analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The verbal reports take the form of stimulated recall interview.The results of this study indicated theses: there are differences between Chinese and English writing in the training received and in the pre-writing and post-writing processes deployed, however; there are similarities in the while-writing processes in both languages and there exists relationships between the Chinese and English writing processes.
