In the short period of time between 1943-1944, the young Zhang Ailing published practically all of her most important novels. Her stories had deep meaning and distinctive artistic originality. Through her detailed description of the traditional Chinese family member living in the metropolis, she unearthed the conditions of living in a major city in China during the onset of modernization. The vanishing feudal ideology represented long-held tradition and the bustling metropolises symbolized the era of capitalism. Together, these factors showed readers the profound conflict between modern civilization and long standing feudal ideals. Such conflict created for her characters distorted personalities and a tragic fate that they could not escape. Zhang especially delves into the warped natures of women at the time and their consequent degradation.Zhang's aesthetic taste was influenced by a deep foundation in traditional Chinese literature as well as Western culture.
