Discourse analysis has played an increasingly important role within the study of language, which has been based largely on the discourse of written and spoken language, read by individuals in the form of linguistic or literary texts. A basic principle of discourse analysis is that the study of language in context will offer a deeper insight into how meaning is attached to utterances rather than the study of language in isolated sentences.The purpose of this thesis is to make readers appreciate The Color Purple, which is the representative work of the famous Afro-American female writer Alice Walker, from the perspective of discourse analysis. This thesis employs the theory of discourse analysis to analyze the novel The Color Purple. First it is through the conversation analysis to analyze The Color Purple, from the allocation of turn-taking, the usage of adjacency pair, it can infer that Celie's process of pursuit her self-identity undergoes three periods, which is chaos, awakening and independence. Then text analysis, this part includes the epistolary form embodied in text, culture embodied in text, symbols embodied in text, and gender embodied in text. For Alice Walker is a female writer, the theme of The Color Purple is about female growth, so gender is a rather important angle to analyze text. The thesis shows the different ideology and different social status of black woman and black man from interruption, questions, silence also topic. During Celie's growth, the black culture is treated as a treasure of black people, such as the color black, the fancy roundness, sisterhood, which are all helpful for Celie's successful pursuit for her new life.
