Georges Paulet's Criticism of Consciousness Theory has its special cultural backgrounds and ideological origins, which including Jean Jacques Rousseau's Romanticism, Wilhelm Dilthey's Historial Hermeneutics, Edmund Husserl's Phenomenology and its methods and so on. Among which, Edmund Husserl's Phenomenology is the most important theory background, which makes it displays the clear characters of phenomenological literary criticism. Otherwise, Georges Paulet was also influenced directly by the pioneer critics of the Reneva School.Georges Paulet's Criticism of Consciousness Theory argues that, literary work is a consciousness'form of human being and literary criticism is criticizing to consciousness essentially. Literature is not an object of recognize but an object of experience, the literary works and readers while reading are different to themselves in common life. Criticism is reading, literary criticism is an identification between the critical subject and the writer's subject, it comes from subject to object and then to the subject again, and in order to make coincide of consciousness between these two subjects. The way of criticism is to discover the author's special expressing form of consciousness by his"Cogito".Georges Paulet's Criticism of Consciousness Theory is relative closely to his views of work's subject and form. In practice of literary criticizing, Georges Paulet mainly studies the subjects of time, space and so on. He discovers these authors'different feeling's ways of time and developing track of consciousness. Georges Paulet acknowledges the existence of form, but only as a shell of spirit entity and a medium to grasp the author's consciousness.In practice of criticizing, Georges Paulet gives explanations to the 17 critics'criticism and some writers'works. He studies from Germaine de Stael to Jean Starobinski, Roland Barthes and so on. He analyses how they catch on the consciousness of critical objects through their own ways of reading, how much success they have achieved. By this way, Georges Paulet reveals their special operating mechanism of critical consciousness respectively. These critics constructive or reach the consciousness of subjects by two probe ways: the"identifical criticism"and the"distant"criticism.
