In recent years, with the development of general linguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology, researchers'attention has shifted from teaching to learning. Language learners become the center of language teaching and learning. As for language learners, many factors affect their language learning, like personality, gender, age, intelligence, aptitude, motivation, and strategy. A lot of researchers have always focused on the research on language learning motivation and language learning strategy. However, there has not been so much related research on the relationship between them, especially selecting students in higher vocational college as the research subjects. In this thesis, the author makes the empirical study in order to have a deep and definite insight into the real conditions of English learning strategy and English learning motivation for students in higher vocational college on the basis of the previous research results.English learning has been one of the important aspects in modern vocational education. In China, higher vocational education has developed rapidly in recent years. The demand of economy, society and vocational technology requires the vocational graduates with high capacity to master English, to center on the core competencies to fit the market needs, to read the foreign technological data skillfully, to learn the world's advanced knowledge and technology in their own domain and to receive the original training abroad, etc. What's more, vocational education enrolls students of diverse background, different ages, and a broad range of educational goals. All lay emphasis on the necessity of studying their current conditions of English learning motivation and learning strategy, two of the most important individual influential factors in language learning.In this thesis, the author focuses her study on the relationship between Language Learning Strategy and Language Learning Motivation. The subjects are 136 non-English majors in the Higher Vocational College of Xidian University and the research was conducted in June, 2006 through a questionnaire survey. There are 60 questions concerning students'learning strategies and learning motivations. The author analyzes these data with the help of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) software and intends to find out what strategies are used and what motivations are held by higher vocational college students as well as the relationship between them.The thesis consists of six chapters.
