The research on listening strategy has been relatively scant in the field of foreign or second language teaching. However, recent interest in this field has increased by addressing the issue with the focus confined to the traditional environment, virtually leaving out Web environment. Given this situation, this study attempts to investigate listening strategies in Web environment, by comparing them with listening strategies in traditional environment.The subjects in this study are 80 students under web-based instruction and 37 students under traditional instruction at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire, which was processed by SPSS (11.0), and interviews of some teachers and students. Detailed analysis of both the qualitative and quantitative data has generated the following findings: (1)Students in the two environments have the same order of used category of strategy, but there is some differences in substrategies. Besides, students in the two environments lack learner autonomy.(2)In Web environment, sophomores use metacognitive strategies more frequently than freshmen do while freshmen favor cognitive strategies and emotion. What's more, freshmen and sophomores in traditional class have a similar frequency order of the metacognitive strategies.(3) The use of metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social/affective strategies by the high-score group...
