Identity Anxiety Or Poetics Anxiety

The controversy about folk writing and intellectual writing in Chinese poetry circles, which broke out at PanFeng Poety Meeting in 1999, is the biggest poetry debate since the debate of Monglong Poety 20 years ago. It indicates the pubic inner divergence in the Vanguard Poetry Circles and is the monumental event in the history of Chinese poetry at the turning of 21st century.To start with, the dissertation makes a brief general review on the dispute between folk writing and intellectual writing, thus making clear the basic contents of these two concepts by their respective statements. On the basis of the above and aiming at the research statue quo in which the critics usually aggrandize the contradiction between the two parties, this thesis focuses on analyzing the common aesthetic pursuits from such respects as personal writing, language consciousness awakening, reflection on the trend of pure poetry, introduction of narration, etc, and in the meantime it also points out their several divergences, for example, spiritual standpoint, thinking mode, discourse resource and artistic device as well.The development and evolvement of Chinese Vanguard Poetry in 1990s is closed connected with the transformation of times'discourse and influenced by poets'self-adjustment of their moods. Furthermore, it conforms to the inherent logic of the succeeding and variation of the literature history proper. From the three aspects of poetry and times, poetry and poets themselves as well as poetry and poetry, Chapter two discusses the deep reasons of the controversy, assuming that in fact the divergences between them have hidden in the poetic practice of both post-Monglong Poetry and the third generation poetry but it is at the end of 20th century that it has been triggered off by anxiety.At the finally part, the dissertation summarizes the significance of the controversy and its influence upon the poetry circles in the new century. This inner controversy in the poetry circles especially various non-theoretic motivations and effects shown in the dispute are the demonstrations of the contemporary Chinese cultural atmosphere. It is not only the main embodiment of poets'poetics anxiety but also, to greater degree, the outstanding manifestation of the crisis of poets'cultural identification in the context of a new era.
