The Study Of Translation From The Perspective Of Culture Differences Between China And Western Countries

Translation is actually the conversion of the information carries in one language into another. Translation, to much extent, is not only the language conversion, but also the exchange and communication between two different cultures. Nowadays, cultural translation as an emerging theory is drawing more and more concern from scholars who study translation, so the author decides to focus on translation from a cultural perspective in this thesis. The whole thesis is mainly divided into five chapters.Chapter One is a general introduction to language and culture, and also examines the relationship between the two.In Chapter two some important cultural related translation theories are put forward and analyzed.Chapter Three further examines the cultural impact on translation. With many examples employed in this chapter, it proves that the relative cultural background knowledge is indispensable to successful translation.Since cultural information plays such an important role in translation, then how can we solve this main conflict between the culture and translation? With this question, chapter Five presents two basic ways of solving this conflict-----domestication and foreignization. The former one refers totarget-culture-oriented approach, which is intended to make the translation easy for the target reader, while the latter one is source-language-culture-oriented translation strategy, which strives to preserve the original flavor as much as possible. Debates about which between the two should be adopted has been going on for a long time in current translation studies. In this chapter, after investigating the related theoretical background, some important factors influencing the choice of strategies are analyzed in details. They include translation purpose, target readers, text types, and translators'culture attitude. In addition, it is pointed out that the translator should pay attention to the dialectical relation between the two strategies and translates with latitude in order for authentic translation.Finally, from the chapters above, it is concluded that cultural knowledge plays a key role in the process of translation. And domestication and foreignization, which are complementary to each other, are two basic ways to solve this conflict between culture and translation. Only when the two strategies are scientific and dialectical connected well can the translator reach truly successful translation.
