In the twentieth century, the Catcher in the Rye, a work written by J· D· Salinger , was published. It became the well-known classical work overnight. This work is characterized by the traditional style of picaresque novel and modern artistic style. This paper focused on the comparison between the modern picaresque novel and the traditional western picaresque novel in characterization, picaresque model, angle of view, narration scene, artistic style on the basis of narrative theory and stream of consciousness. This paper points out that this work is a combination of the merits of traditional picaresque novel and various modern artistic styles, which transcends the narration model of traditional picaresque novel and showed a unique artistic style.
