| "Neo-Immigrant Literature" was just a branch of World-Chinese Literature at first, and became an independent study field only in recent years. The study on "Neo-Immigrant Literature" began to present a condition of prosperity. For their original female narration voices and life experiences, female writers play a prominent role in this neo-immigrant literature creation group. Among them, Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling push themselves forward because of their advantages. This thesis takes special reference to Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling. By employing theories of culture study and feminism, with study methods of text analysis and author biography, it gives a specific demonstration of Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling's characteristic.Firstly, vivid western life experiences and strong Chinese literary temperaments. From 1950s to 1980s, history, educational modes, life experiences, cultural notions, and thinking modalities in mainland of China have gone through great changes. All of these changes have become an inseparable part and then accumulated into a kind of unconsciousness in their hearts, which in some degree cultivated their advantages, making them belong to not only Western (now) for their vivid western life experiences but also China (past) for their strong Chinese literary temperaments.Secondly, two experiences and dual cultures. Both Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling were bora and brought up in mainland, so in some way they can be called as the "products" of Chinese culture. After they grow up, they went to the West where they accepted the "reformation" of Western culture. The two different national cultural values of mainland and the West brought them different concepts on many things, from daily life, love, marriage to levels of interpersonal relationships and psychology. All of these imposed great influences on Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling, so that they felt great hopelessness while facing the conflicts and merges of the two different cultures.. Thirdly, changing concepts and reconstructing standpoints. "Culture conflicts" may appear in a part of new immigrant writers' works. Different from them, Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling devote more to incarnate the common human world. By changing the concept that there exists inevitable conflicts between Asian and Western cultures, putting off the anxieties resulting from long indulgence in cultural conflicts, suspending Chinese immigrants' habitual thinking way of identifying identity and culture, and playing their advantages of wide vision and dual life experiences, Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling realize their span and merge of the differences from nations, countries and cultures. Thus, their works widen and deepen the meaning of humanity.Fourthly, baptism from cultures and exploitation into forms. Western culture brings Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling not only the retrospection of motherland's culture, another thinking about immigrant lives, but also a kind of learning from Western modernist and post-modernist narration forms. For their works pay more attention to life itself, their works, while narrating the common everyday life, are full of wisdom, diversities of expressing manners and free styles. In all the World-Chinese writers, some may be the promoter persisting in motherland's culture, some may accept other land's culture, and some may be the "cosmopolitanist" concerning about human being's living condition. Obviously, Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling should belong to the last. Through writing endlessly, taking great efforts to record neo-immigrants' lives abroad as well as conveying their own new thoughts about humanity and life, Yan Ge-ling and Zhang Ling bring neo-immigrant literature away from "marginal literature" and escalate it into the new literary type of mainstream society. |
