A Study Of The Chinese Female Translation From The Perspective Of Feminism

In the 1980s, the "cultural turn" in translation studies drove scholars to focus on a new topic, namely, feminist translation. Under the guidance of the Western feminist translation theory, feminist translators revealed gender metaphors that discriminated against women in translation studies, stressed the necessity of the equality between the translated texts and the original texts and emphasized that translation was a political activity to strive for a due position for women and translators in society. In translation practice, feminist translators employed radical feminist translation strategies, such as supplementing, hijacking, prefacing and footnoting, to make women seen and heard in their translation.Since it was introduced by Zhu Hong in the 1980s, feminism began to exert significant impact on the study and criticism of foreign literature and female literature writing in China. In 2002, Western feminist translation theory started to influence the translation study in our country. Many scholars in the translation fields published articles in authoritative journals and magazines, exploring the characteristics of the feminist translation theory from different perspectives. However, few of them have referred to feminist translation theory in the context of China.After being introduced into China, feminism began to have different influences on translation study due to different social, historical and cultural backgrounds. Compared with the radicalness of Western feminist translators and their strong sense of mission to overthrow patriarchal domination in literature, Chinese female translators are in favor of adopting relatively mild and conservative translation attitudes and approaches and have the following characteristics: 1) Influenced deeply by traditional translation concepts 2) Unconscious display of women's awareness 3) There are no obvious political purposes in Chinese female translations.After a brief review of the origin and development of feminism, the combination of feminism and translation studies and western feminist translation theories in the West, this thesis makes a careful examination of the actual situation in China and its influences on Chinese translation studies. Then it explores the characteristics of the Chinese female translators and analyzes the causes for the differences between the Western feminist translators and Chinese women translators.
