Teachers play very important roles in English language teaching. The teacher is the critical factor in the reform of education and school improvement. The educational objective may be defined as a desired change in the behavior of a person through education, while the teacher is the vital factor of the behavior of teaching. Therefore, the research on the teachers' roles deserves great attention. This thesis aims to conduct a detailed analysis of the evolution of the teachers' roles from diachronic perspective. Through illustrating the concept of the teachers' roles, investigating the teachers' roles in the teacher-centered teaching and learner-centered teaching, and exploring the teachers' roles in the "post-method" era, the evolution of the teachers' roles can be manifested. In the end, conclusions are drawn in view of the previous analysis. First of all, the role of the teacher is more important than before. The teacher should take the merits of both teacher-centered teaching and learner-centered teaching, guiding the classroom norm to develop into double-centered teaching, establishing better interaction with the students. Secondly, the roles of students change from passive to active. Thirdly, different language teaching approaches can be employed in teaching the same material.
