Recently, corpus linguistics is very popular at home and abroad. Corpus-based studies with their scientific way of study and actual data are more convincing than the traditional way of studies. In China, corpus-based studies took off since more and more learner corpora were established, especially when CLEC (Chinese Learner English Corpus) was available. Many significant studies have been done which are valuable to English learning and teaching. However, little has been done to improve the error warning in ECLDs based on learner corpora. Through a careful comparison of several dictionaries, this thesis finds out that very few English learners' dictionaries have provided error warnings. Moreover, for those dictionaries that have already attempted to do so, they also have room for improvement. Firstly, the number of error warnings, compared with learners' errors, are not enough. Secondly, some error warnings are not specially designed for the intended users, thus they turn out to be of little help to the users. Last but not least, the way dictionaries present error warnings is not perfect.Based on CLEC, the author finds out that learners frequently make verb errors in the following aspects: confusion of transitive verbs and intransitive verbs, number agreement with the subject (noun or pronoun), errors in tense use within a sentence or the sequence of tenses between sentences and misuse of modal or auxiliary verbs. Besides, learners at different levels have their own characteristics in making errors. After the author makes a thorough study on the design and arrangement of the error warnings in current dictionaries, some suggestions are made and samples of error warnings are given.
