Hu yinglin was an important person in Chinese literature in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, whose interest covered literature and history. Together with Li Weizhen, Tu Long, Wei yunzhong, Zhao Yongxian, Hu was called one of"the most famous five men of letter in late Ming Dynasty"for his rich knowledge and works. As the successor of Wang Shizhen, Hu presided over poetic affairs of China. Lu Xun once praised Hu as"one of the ten greatest men of letter in ancient China".Hu's idea on poem could be found in his masterpiece Shi Sou, which was made up of four volumes, namely, nei, wai, za and xu. Poem as it is, it has a complete system. Nei comments on poems regarding their structures, such as five, seven and mixed characters in ancient styles, and five, seven and those poems in four lines in"modern style"poetry. Wai, za and xu comment poems with regard to style, with poems and their writers ranging from Zhou to Ming dynasty. Unfortunately, such a masterpiece like this has not received much attention in academic circles.This thesis tends to interpret it from three perspectives, for each of which a chapter is devoted.The first chapter mainly introduces Hu's idea on wen and zhi style. After a review of literature about the development of wen and zhi's essence, the thesis compares it with that in shi sou. It is believed that this is Hu's important standard in reviewing poems, which is devoted mostly to poems in Han, Wei and Liu Dynasty. At last, it is pointed out that the poems in Han and Wei Dynasty are characteristic of being elegant in style of writing and natural and simple in language and those in Liu Dynasty are strict in form and empty in thought.Chapter two mainly discussed the relation between form and category. First of all, a linear description about style in Chinese and western literature after three patterns most often used in shi sou are pointed out: style, image, and elegance. In terms of style, he combines wen and zhi perfectly when commenting ancient poems and focuses on rhyme scheme and rhythm when doing modern ones. The image has two meanings, employed to review and ancient poems and funeral oration, imagery in its own sense and harmony and integration in"elegance", referring to the romantic charm enjoyed by good poems, represented by two aesthetic features: one is natural in language and gentle in style, with the verse with five characters to each line being its literary form, the other is heroic and uninhibited, with the verse with seven characters to each line and the verse with seven characters its four lines to be its form.The last chapter is devoted to the narrative factor, which goes in two directions: expressing feelings towards history and han yue fu poems and situation and. Through such analysis, we can understand that Hu pays attention not only to lyrics, but to situation and narrative verse and their relation to each other. Their perfect combination has brought poetry to the highest level.
