A Study On Yu Guangzhong's Modern Prose Theory

In the 1960's, the modern literature movement in which the modern poem and the modern novel was innovated as the main trend emerged from the Taiwan literary arena . Under this background, Yu Guangzhong who walked thoughout the front line of the innovation movement brightly revealed the slogan of"the modern prose"in the earlier 1960's. In this foundation,he explained a series of the esthetics idea and the creation principle about the modern prose, and gradually formed the mature theory system.As an independent writer, Yu Guangzhong learns China classical literature and the western art, his modern prose theory originates from the tension by two kinds of factors:the interaction between modern and tradition;the ineraction between Chinese literature and western art .This paper has three parts: preface , body and conclusion.The preface firstly introduces the modern significance of Yu Guangzhoung's prose innovation.Then it brings forward the search problems.â… .Modern Prose:the core of Yu Guangzhoung's Modern Prose TheoryThe system of Yu's modern prose theory is constructed on the base of"Modern Prose".It refers to prose writings indited by the authors who have modern people's consciousness and modern skills.From a given point, it tallies the morde people's values in Taiwan,which entered the industry society gradually after 1960's. It said goodbye to the May Fourth vernacular worships and the negative style, challenging the May Fourth vernacular prose by the new appearance.Yu Guangzhong went on a deep exploration on the connotation of the"Modern"of"Modern Prose",focusing on requesting the creator to utilize the rich modern significance and the performance skills: namely emphasizing "the elasticity", "the density" and "the material" about the prose, using the literary reference to create the meaning ideal condition. Next is that develops varieties of the modern significant themes.Depending on the domain of Modern Prose,Yu Guangzhong probes into the complex relationship between tradition and modern.He appreciates China classical literature which is called the big tradition,criticizing the May Fourth new literature which is called the small tradition, therefore, his so-called literature creation should derive the nutrition from the tradition which refers to China classical literature in more significances.Not only does he object to conservative attitude towards tradition,but also argues against the radical proposal of thorough occidentalization.On the contrary,he advocates that the creator should go out from China classical literature at first, then studies the western classical tradition and the modern art, finally returns to China, inheriting and developping China classical tradition in order to establish the new live tradition.â…¡. Sence and intellect in harmony: the aesthetic model of Yu Guangzhoung's Modern Prose Theory"Sence and intellect in harmony"is a important standard about how to value a prose.To these two conception of"sence"and"intellect",Yu Guangzhong has the unique understanding. We usually understand "sence", aiming at the content level of a prose, namely manifestating intellect experience, but Yu Guangzhong expanded the conception to the form level,.He thinks that the generalized"intellect"even might refer to the charming of a knowledge article which wonderfully arranged the structure, the intonation, the image and so on ."Intellect"includes the knowledge and the opinion, which should naturally reveal the creator's wisdom in the article. Yu Guangzhong divides a prose into six kinds according to its function.He believes that depiction, narration, describing the res can make the article perceptive; But expressing emotion, reasoning things out, arguing these three items are abstract and subjective,which can causes the article to have intellect. To a good prose, the most ideal condition should be "harmonious". In fact, comprehensively surveying his theory, we can find that it is more accordence with the May Fourth prose theory.For exemple:The meanings of the two words"modern"are more similar, the language innovation manners are similar ,and the ideas about"sense and intellect in harmony"are same.At the same time, he also has challenged the May Fourth prose writers by his creative practice and theory. For exemple:He tries to broaden the artistic conception of a prose; create the positive literary style;and his big prose view demonstrates he has open artistic spirit.
