This thesis aims to apply pragmatic perspective of adaptation by Verschueren to translation, an attempt to analyze the translators' adaptation inclination through examples selected from an English version of the Chinese novel Fortress Besieged.Verschueren proposes adaptation theory and regards language use as a continuous choice making with different degrees of salience for the purpose of adaptation. This present study is designed to take translation as a process of choice making for the purpose of adaptation to various factors and tries to give explanations from linguistic and extra-linguistic perspectives. To make this study more convincing, examples from both English and Chinese versions in figures of speech and other salient language phenomena are carefully selected. Through the analysis of translation adaptation inclination, the author draws the conclusion that several factors may influence the translators' focus of adaptation inclination to source text, source culture, target culture and target readers.
