Comment On Song Dynasty's Robes

Song Dynasty is the first Dynasty which attaches importance to humanity administration, and high-mature Confucian ethical code as well. Robes and personal adornments from the emperors'to the officials'play significant role in political life in Song Dynasty which serves as a special symbol in the society, politics and culture. Therefore, the orders of costumes issued by the rulers in Song Dynasty aim at creating the feudal moral value through the costumes in order to maintain the rulers'privilege. This paper centers on Song Dynasty's official robes, analyzes the costume characteristics in styles, materials, accessories and colors, etc on different occasions. All these regulations take"courtesy"as the starting point. It is obvious that"courtesy"has profound influence on politics, economy, military and culture. In a sense, the history of costume and system in a Dynasty is also the history of"courtesy". The robes and personal adornments in Song Dynasty, whether they are kings', Queens'or all ranks of officials', create a particular atmosphere under denotation in costume and connotation in culture, revealing the strict feudal system, exhibiting the kings'power, and therefore strengthening the rulers'position.
