As a very typical linguistic phenomenon in Chinese language, assessment is a verbal actionwhich reflects speakers' attitude and emotion. The current study of assessment action, however, mainly focuses on static descriptions, viz. study at the levels of vocabulary, syntax or semantics, instead of dynamic and comprehensive research. No one have ever taken a special study ofassessment in Chinese language from the perspectives of pragmatics, nor defined assessment asan independent verbal action in Chinese language. On the basis of pragmatics and discourse analysis, this thesis attempts to make a comprehensiveanalysis on assessed action. The paper also makes a scientific definition on assessment action, including the distinguishing between assessment action and action with assessment significance(e.g. compliment, satire, abuse, etc.). Moreover, the author makes a special study on assessmentaction, classifies it according to two classifying standards, and then gives the negativeassessment action and its application an in-depth analysis. My study comes to a conclusion that the macro strategy of negative assessment can be dividedinto direct and indirect strategies, but at the micro level there are five categories: viz. referencestrategy, ambiguity-restriction strategy, presupposition strategy, enantiosis strategy andadditional-information strategy.
