| The effect of affective variables, especially anxiety levels on language learning has been studied extensively, and researchers have got a lot of findings. Considering the objective of college English teaching is to cultivate students' comprehensive English competence, and with the analysis of the current teaching practice in most colleges in China, including the author's working university, this research takes an interest in the effect of the humanized methods of feedback in college English teaching on students' anxiety levels as well as their four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The study is based on several important theories, such as humanism, Krashen's affective filter hypothesis, the theory of teacher feedback and anxiety. Based on the above theories, this paper puts forward the concept of 'humanized methods of feedback', and it also describes eight concrete and feasible approaches that can be applied to college English listening, speaking, reading and writing classes. The study designs four English Classroom Anxiety Scales (ECAS) and carries out eight experiments with the aim to find out the influence of humanized methods of teacher feedback on students' anxiety levels and their four basic skills. The experiments lasted four months and generally can be divided into three steps: data collection, data selection and data analysis. The participants involve the author herself and three classes with a total of 118 students, including the eight students selected in case studies. The conclusions of the study are the following items: 1. for most college students, classroom anxiety is the biggest obstacle in their English learning. Most students' anxiety belongs to the situational anxiety. When they are in a specific or very important situation, their anxiety levels will be increased and become a barrier to their performances. 2. the application of humanized methods of teacher feedback in college English teaching can reduce students' anxiety levels in a certain degree. 3. the application of humanized methods of teacher feedback in college English teaching can improve students' four basic skills to a certain extent. This paper consists of five parts: the first part introduces the background, the significance of the study and the structure of the paper. The second part deals with the theoretical background. In this part, humanism, Krashen's affective filter hypothesis, anxiety as well as teacher feedback have been generally reviewed. The third part refers to the experimental foundation. In this part, the term 'humanized methods of feedback' is defined, and altogether eight concrete and feasible approaches are described in details. The fourth part is the experimental study. It includes eight independent experiments using the methods of comparison, T-Test and case study, and with the help of the computer, it also analyzes some relevant data. This part clearly shows the influence of humanized methods of feedback on students' anxiety levels and their four basic skills in college English teaching. The fifth part is the conclusion. This part is concerned with the major findings, pedagogical implications, limitations of the present study, and suggestions for the future research. |
