Playing a vital role in the teaching of College English, teaching materials determine in a great degree the teaching methods and class models of College English. Textbook evaluation is of significant importance for both teaching and learning in such aspects that selecting textbooks, promoting teaching and helping the users comprehend them fully.How to improve English listening and speaking proficiency is very important in English teaching and learning, which has aroused great attention among more and more English teachers and researchers. Therefore, many researches have been conducted in this field. However, studies of textbook evaluation on college English listening and speaking textbooks are still few.This paper, based on the theories and practice, explores the present using and needs for college English listening and speaking textbooks through investigation and research, aiming at providing suggestions for the selection and development of college English listening and speaking materials.This paper consists of the following four chapters.The first chapter introduces the related background, the aims and the practical significance of the study, and the general structure of the thesis.Chapter Two reviews the theoretical basis of the research. It introduces some experts'theories of needs analysis, textbook evaluation and input and output in second language acquisition.Chapter Three is the empirical study part. A thorough evaluation on Experiencing English Listening and Speaking is conducted. The objects of the investigation are students and teachers in Changchun University of Science and Technology and the instruments are questionnaires, interviews, and observations. This part firstly introduces the information of the chosen textbook; secondly carries out a needs analysis on the users (teachers and students); thirdly conducts an evaluation on the textbook from different angles (design and organization, content, skills and strategies, activities, methodology, and reference book), and finally analyzes the results of the study according to the information generated from all the research methods mentioned above.Chapter Four is the conclusion. It generalizes the findings of the evaluation, points out the limitations of this study and suggests possible development of further research.The information generated from this study could be very beneficial, as such an evaluation can help current teacher users of the textbooks understand the strengths and weaknesses of them comprehensively and adapt them more effectively. In addition, the research approaches can provide valuable implications for textbook evaluation and related studies.
