In French music history, Camelle Saint-Saens was in the position of holding the balance. He, who was the most important music inheritor after Berliaz and prior to Claud Debussy, propelled the revival and development of French absolute instrumental music. Furthermore, no matter in the history of instrumental music in French or of the world symphony, his No.3 organ symphony was the outstanding composition which should not be neglected. Based on the perspectives of historiography, aesthetic and sociology, Sanit-Saens and his compositions were comprehensively inquired and surveyed in this thesis. Consists of five parts, the thesis concerned the origin and situation of the symphony in France in nineteenth century, the process of composing the symphony, factors that influenced Saint-Saens's composition, noumenon analysis of No.3 symphony and the acceptances and criticisms of Saint-Saens's No.3 symphony.Part one organized the background of the composition in terms of the status quo and origin of the symphony in France in nineteenth century.Part two elaborated the factors that, including List, Saint-Saens's life experiences and his knowledge construction, influenced his composition.Part three mainly introduced the process of composition motivation and stylistic features of Saint-Saens's five symphonies.Part four is an analysis of music noumenon of No.3 symphony from the aspects of theme development techniques, characteristics of the general structure, personal orchestration and the distinctive arrangement of the organ etc..From of historiographical and aesthetic viewpoints, part five arranged the acceptances and criticisms of Saint-Saens and his compositions, the author objectively analyzed the reasons and discussed his own viewpoints, attempted to find a new objective position and appraisal for Saint-Saens's symphonies.
