Pictograph is the base of conformation of Chinese character. If there is no pictograph, others Chinese character could not be constructed, such as associative compound, phonogram. The thesis including several aspects as follow to study the pictograph in Shuowenjiezi.I. By reviewing the external character of pictograph, the thesis has confined the standard to ascertain whether a Chinese character is a pictograph or not, has computed the amount of pictograph and head of Chinese character that hold the same ideogram in pictograph and tactic state of pictograph in Shuowenjiezi, and has sorted the pictograph in Shuowenjiezi according to four aspects of quality of conformation, sorts of simulating object, mode of selecting objects' appearance and part of speech, which is a synthetically studying on the base of the predecessors' studying.II .There are some mistakes in Shuowenjiezi to explain pictograph, the predecessors have pointed for many times, but did not synthetically to analyze. By concluding the content of annotation, the thesis has explored the method of XuShen to explaining the shape, pronunciation and meaning of pictograph and farther explained the primary meaning of sectional typical pictograph, which was false explained.III .The thesis has compared the letterform of Xiaozhuan and Chongwen of pictograph in Shuowenjiezi and the corresponding letterform of Jiaguwen and Jinwen, has found their sameness and dissimilarity, has elucidated the successive and deformational character, which archaic Chinese character in Shuowenjiezi towards Jiaguwen and Jinwen, accordingly to peek the evolutive rule of archaic Chinese character.IV.Character is one of the carriers of culture of a nation. Resorting the Chinese character, we could to sense the pattern of thought of Chinese predecessor and archaic culture of china. Pictograph is may looked as the primary Chinese character for conforming a Chinese character, so recurring to pictograph in Shuowenjiezi, the thesis has explored the pattern of thought of Chinese predecessor that to conform a Chinese character in the three aspects of looked person as the center of all thing, utility and taste.V .The thesis still has discussed the method which utilizing to simulate the figuration of thing has certain limitation, so pictograph always pursue to become a phonogram in the progress of evolution.
