A Study Of Waterways' Security In The Area Of Jiangnanxi Tao In Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty was the period that Jiangnanxi Tao area social economy developed greatly. There were many rivers and lakes in this area, and the waterways'economy was very flourishing, not only the shipping was busy, but also many merchants traded on various waterways, which aroused the commercial development along the roads. Accompany with the flourishing of river transportation, the waterways'safety problem also became more outstanding because of natural and social reasons. In order to maintain the dominion of government and protect businessmen and travelers, resolving the waterway's security problem played an important program in the affairs of Tang government. In allusion to settle those problems, the government adopted a great deal of measures, such as fixing water conservancy, dredging river course, fighting against thieves on the rivers, removing separatist regime etc. Accordingly, the citizen's safety realizes of waterway security were also enhanced continuously, or consigned on the faith, or tallied up experience to avoid harms in practice. The fact proved that the measures taken by the government and the citizens'self-realizing and self-behavior to the security problems made sense in resolving those issues. The waterways'security impacted the society economic fairly. On the one hand, it pushed the development of the economy, politic and culture in the area. On the other hand, because of the depravation of water route, it also restrained the development of society economic in some period and to certain degree. A research on the waterways'security problem in the Jiangnanxi Tao of Tang Dynasty will not only contribute to explaining the relationship between social economic development and the waterways'safety problem, but also revealing the connection between the central and region governments and many other social problems.
