| Since 1970s, codeswitching has been an important research topic in many disciplines. Scholars try to reveal the social motivation, pragmatic function, psychological process and the like of codeswitching from various disciplines: sociolinguistics, syntax, conversational analysis, for instance. Many theories and notions have been put forward by western linguistists. The achievement of codeswitching study in China is comparatively insufficient.The paper starts with the definition of codeswitching given from the different understandings. There are three types of definitions of codeswitching: (1) the first type maintains the difference between codeswitching and code mixing; (2) the second type does not maintain the distinction between the two; (3) the third type does not take a stance as to the distinction between them. The author of this paper preferes the second type of definition and she combines the ideas of Wardhaugh and Scotton, then puts forward the idea that codeswitching can be languages and language varieties which can be words or sentenses in conversations.Then three disciplines of codeswitching are generalized and introduced, namely, the sociolinguistics, pragmatics and psycholinguistics, among which the author focuses on introducing Verschueren's theory of linguistic adaptability. All of these theories have contributed to people's perception of codeswitching, but no one is strong and comprehensive enough to cover the complexity of codeswitching. During the course of thesis preparation, the author collected a lot of corpus which contain codeswitchings by noting down the conversations of citizens in Nanning. She analyses the codeswitchings of citizens in Nanning from theories of sociolinguistics, pragmatics and psycholinguistics. Based on the analysis of codeswitchings, five forming reasons of the codeswitchings are sum up according to the features of codeswitchings of citizens in Nanning. Hopefully the research and analysis will be helpful to language learning.
