| Dwight Eisenhower's policy to Cambodia is the important part of U.S. cold-war stratagem. After World War II, many countries in SE Asian strove for independence and sovereignty. But under the cold war of Soviet Union and the USA, Cambodia had to choose the best foreign policy for itself. USA believed that the neutralism of Cambodia compromised with communism; the foreign affairs of Cambodia were representations of"Domino Effect". That could threaten the benefits of free world, and global strategy of USA.USA tried to turnover Sihanouk's power to build up a new pro-west power through the ways of"puppets","containment"and"subversion", and wanted Cambodia to become an important base of contain China PR. In 1958, especially, Cambodia and China PR established diplomatic relations. USA had some inconsistency with Cambodia, and USA believed that neutralism of Cambodia was very"immoral". So the relationship of the two countries fell down to the earth.This article will research the Eisenhower Administration's foreign policy to Cambodia which experiences origin, transformation and development process. It can inquire and comb the new declassified Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) with the correlative reference materials and the network resources. The author tries to utilize the correlative knowledge of history and international relations, and take the national interest principle as the main theory basis, to generalize and analyze Eisenhower Administration policy characteristic to Cambodia, and find out the complexity of the relations between China PR and the USA. |
