Lingling of Yongzhou lies in the south of Hunan province. It is a typical "double parties talk area". The regional mandarins and dialects coexist and the mandarins are the commonly used language in the communication of different areas. There are obvious differences between each speech condition of regional mandarins. The academia has carried out a comprehensive study on the Youtingxu dialects, but the Shuikoushan dialects system, which is another representation of Lingling languages hasn't attracted much attention. This resulted in the lack of comprehensive research. For these reasons, a detailed description on the phonetic system of Lingling Shuikoushan dialects was carried out by us based on the fieldwork. In addition, we compared the Shuikoushan dialects with the Beijing dialects and the mandarins of Lingling. We are intent to show the status and functions of the Shuikoushan dialects among all regional mandarins in Lingling. It makes up the deficiency of research on Shuikoushan dialects of Lingling in addtion to provide many supplement materials for the study of both the regional mandarins and the dialects of south Hunan. The text is divided into six parts:The Introduction Part involves: the geography, history, population and the use of languages in the Shuikoushan town; the current studies on the Shuikoushan dialects; and the points and significance of our research. The first chapter describes the whole of system of initials, finales and expression of the Shuikoushan dialects in detail. The second chapter describes the properties of the phonetic system as well as the relationships between the initials and the vowels of the Shuikoushan dialects. The third chapter describes and analyses the literary pronunciation and the colloquial pronunciation of the Shuikoushan dialects. The fourth chapter shows a syllabary of the Shuikoushan dialects based on our research. The fifth chapter compares the Shuikoushan dialects with the Youtingxu dialects, the Beijing dialects and the regional mandarins of Lingling. Furthermore, it points out the differences between the Shuikoushan dialects and the Beijing dialects and the Lingling mandarins, thus determines the status of it in the Lingling regional mandarins.
