| The translation of classical Chinese poetry has always been controversial.Particularly, when it comes to the issue whether or not should the rhyme scheme betransferred to the target language, scholars and translators never yielded their effortsvoicing their opinion. Those who adhere to the retaining of rhyme scheme of the originalmight well transfer the "music" of the original. But sometimes, they may have to sacrificesense to rhyme. By contrast, though retaining the sense, those who adopt free versetranslation lost the beauty in sound. So either approach the translator adopt, the translationcan only be an approximation of the original.And by a close analysis of different renditions by different schools, rhymed or not,there are a lot of fine works. This thesis then quote the theory of "Multiplicity andComplementarity of Translation Criterion" proposed by Prof. Gu Zhengkun and arguethat we should adopt a multiple perspective toward CCP translation. The existing finerenditions can and should co-exist, so as to help the readers get a more comprehensiveunderstanding of the original, which a single rendition can hardly provide. By doing so,translator will somehow be released from the onus of interpreting the original. |
