A Study On Female Facial Attractiveness And Its Relationship To Personality And Mental Health

The purpose of this study is to discuss (1) the influence of symmetry, averageness, feature size and facial skin health to female facial attractiveness. (2) the relationship between female facial attractiveness, its affecting factors and mental health, personality. Samples of 110 standard female digital photographs were taken by researcher, let them complete the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90) and Big Five Inventory (BFI), and then measure their facial structure; computer programs were designed to invite the participants to appraise their facial attractiveness, facial skin health and personality, and then we obtain following results through statistical analysis:(1) Male's assessment in facial attractiveness and skin health are significantly lower than the women's evaluation.(2)There are significant correlation between symmetry,averageness,feature size,facial skin health and female facial attractiveness, and skin health has the greatest impact on the facial attractiveness.(3) There is no correlation between female facial attractiveness and personality. But female symmetry has correlation with the evaluators assessed personality, in particular, neuroticism (N) has significantly negative correlation with it, while in others there is no significant correlation; facial symmetry also has relationship with the self-assessment personality especially in Consciousness (C),Agreeableness (A) and Neuroticism (N),the correlation is significant. Subjects in high facial symmetry have low Neuroticism (N) scores, while have high Consciousness (C) and Agreeableness (A) scores.(4) Although female facial attractiveness has no significant correlation with the total score of mental health, has significant negative correlation with interpersonal sensitivity,anxiety and photic anxiety, subjects have high facial attractiveness have significantly lower scores in the three dimensions.(5) Further analysis indicate, female facial symmetry has significant negative correlation with the total score of the Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90), especially in obsessive-compulsive,interpersonal sensitivity,hostility,photic anxiety,paranoid ideation and psychoticism,but has no significant correlation with other dimensions.
