" Vier Ernste Geasnge "are German Austria composer Johannes Brahms's last set vocal works, which also are the summary of Brahms's lied composing. The theme of the song "the death" is romantic, but it uses the classic music form. Brahms has splendidly dealt with the contradictions between the romantic lyricism and the classic form, which has fully manifested his solid composing skill and prudential personality.This article studies the song cycle from the following aspects, such as the composing motive, the meaning of the lyrics, the piano as well as the deduction, so that can grasp the style and explain the connotation accurately.This article consists of three parts, the preface, the main context and the conclusion. The preface has explained in short the meaning as well as the present situation of the study. The main text is divided into three parts. The first part summarizes Brahms's lied through his biography and his composing periods. The second part discusses the creation motive, the meaning of the lyrics as well as the music character. The third part proposed the understanding and the deduction to the" Vier Ernste Gesange ". The conclusion partially proposed the important role that the song cycle played in Brahms's lied composing.
