Research On Harmony Of Schumann's Three Piano Suites

Rubert Alexander Schumann(1810-1856),who was a great German composer, pianist, conductor and commentator, was full of romantic legendary in his short life. Schumann's piano works, created with his unique way of musical thought and creative skills embodies the life passion and profound poetry in his strict logic. Undoubtedly, his works of piano music can best embody his music style. Researching work to Schumann must be from understanding his piano music.This paper regards the early creation of Schumann's three piano suites "Carnival", "Childhood Scenes" and "Symphonic Etudes" as the study text. We explore diversified harmony language characteristic of Schumann through carding and classification harmony skills on chords form ,harmony conducting and adjust type adjust of three piano suites, which can causes people's concern about Schumann to promote further research work to Schumann.This paper is divided into five parts totally:Chapter 1 is a summary of the full paper, including Schumann's life, introduction of creation of three piano suites and pointing out the value and significance of researching three piano suites. chapter 2 is a summary of three piano suites'characteristics : (1) Simplicity of tunes structure; (2) Melody's lyricism and improvisatori; (3) Motivation material's perforation; (4) Content of works'literary. This paper fully explores Schumann's characteristics of writing style in early piano suites from four aspects above.Chapter 3 and chapter 4 are the main part of this paper. Chapter 3 discusses harmony skills about Schumann's three piano suites and has a summary from the chord structure, harmony conducting and harmony termination. Chapter 4 discussed Schumann's works especially in the adjust type adjusts on the contrast and alternating, including alternation of relationship between size of the tone, alternation of the principal tone all of the adjusts type, alternation of synthesis, contraposition of tonality, which help find out harmony skills of Schumann's works.The conclusion part of this paper presents the harmony skills about three piano suites "Carnival" , "Childhood Scenes" and "Symphonic Etudes" based on the analysis and research on Schumann's works, trying to show that creative thinking and creative principle"highlight the personality in commonness, contrast to seek unification".
