Rachmaninoff, who traditionally inherits the romantic music, is one of the outstanding representatives in Russian music field from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. He is an all-round musician and makes great contribution to many aspects of music, such as composing, conducting and instrumental performing. The range of Rachmaninoff's work is wide, involving opera, symphony, chamber music, piano concerto, symphonic poem, piano prelude, partita, and etude etc.Fullbodied nationality is characteristic of Rachmaninoff's music works, whose melody is beautiful and smooth and whose feelings are sincere and moving. His composing style is very like that of Tschaikovsky. Piano works is put the center place of his overall ones. Third Concerto For the Piano written in 1909, also called the Third Piano Concerto in D minor, was a milestone of his music career, reaching the summit of Rachmaninoff composing in the early ten years of 20th centry.The Third Piano Concerto in D minor, is regarded as the most excellent concerto among all romantic piano ones, no matter from the technique of performance or from the style of composing. This composition takes a very important position in Rachmaninoff's and other similar works, even in the whole history of music development.This thesis includes four chapters. The first chapter mainly deals with the reasons of cultural formation of Rachmaninoff's concerto, which was elaborated from three phases, that is, a brief account of composer's life story and artistic creation, social historic background, and the introduction to concerto. The second chapter is the analysis of the music noumenon. It analyzes the composition's structure of music form,modality,constitution of melody, gradation of fabric and so forth. The third chapter introduces the stylistic feature of the Third Piano Concerto in D minor,including its innovation and development of romantic and national style. In the fourth chapter, the author first sets forth Rachmaninoff's annotation of the concerto's performance and then selects several representative performing version of four famous performers (Horowitz,Ashkenazy,Argerich,Lang Lang) to compare their differences.. From the introduction of the four performers and their version, technical analysis and contrast of performance and contrast of their performing style, the author elaborates each performer's unique artistic feature. Based on the detailed analysis and contrast of melody, fabric,strength and speed, stepping on the treadle, the author concludes the technical difficulty of the Third Piano Concerto in D minor, scans different performers'unique performing technique from the perspective of piano performance. At the end of the fourth chapter, this thesis summarizes the trait and value of each performing version and provides some possibilities of dealing with every aspect of music for the future performing teaching.
