The great scale of China's shipbuilding industry in Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties periods laid the foundation for the arrival of shipbuilding peak in Song Dynasty. Shipbuilding industry has high requirements on technology and it can reflect the level of economic development of handicraft production departments at that time. So the research on China southwest area's shipbuilding industry in Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties periods is not only to understand the shipbuilding technology and shipbuilding capacity and the important role which the shipbuilding industry played in political stability and economic development in the Sui and Tang and Five Dynasties periods, but also to deepen our understanding of the level of economic development in the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties periods.At the same time, it can also provide useful historical reference for today's great western development.Inspection on shipbuilding distribution of the southwest region in Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties periods are based mainly on "Sui annals", "old Tang annals","new Tang annals"and "the annals of Yuanhe country", "Zi Zhi Tong Jian", as well as ancient political books, the category , notes, novels, poetry and other literature and archaeological materials,with particular attention to the combination of archaeological materials and the literature handed down. The shipbuilding factories of southwest region in Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties periods were: Chengdu Fu, Qiong Zhou, Mei Zhou, Kui Zhou, Nan Zhou, Li Zhou, Gui Zhou, and Rong Zhou, Yu Zhou, Lu Zhou and so on , the most famous of which were Chengdu Fu, Kui Zhou, Jia Zhou,Yu Zhou,He Zhou. Towns where the shipbuilding factories distributed were mainly in the Yangtze River, Minjiang River and the Jialing River Basin. This distribution was due to such reasons: First, shipbuilding needs rich raw materials, such as lime, tung oil and nails, bamboo, cloth, Po, cotton and Ma in addition to extensive timber. Second, it also needs good geographic conditions to set boat field. Third, it must need a large number of skilled workers in the shipbuilding technology.Inspection on vessel types and the use of technology of southwest region in Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties periods is a very important task. This thesis mainly makes use of the above documents, supplemented by archaeological materials to complete. Vessels of the Southwest region in Tang dynasty generally could be divided into five types: warships, merchant ships, sea ships, fishing boats and special vessels. In technical application, vessels in southwest region not only applied the propelled equipment which is suitable for characteristics of the waters in southwest, but also inherited traditional technology of previous generations, and constantly had technical exchanges with other areas in the same period. It also used watertight subdivision techniques and universally used putty Qian slit and preservation technologies and so on.The development of shipbuilding industry of southwest region in Sui, Tang and the Five Dynasties periods had a close relationship with political stability and reunification and economic prosperity. In addition, the development of the shipbuilding industry in southwest region also had a significant impact on the economy development. The impact performanced in many ways: Firstly, promoting the materials exchange. Secondly, promoting the development of commercial cities. Thirdly, promoting the development of iron industry, the tung oil industry and catering service industries and the development of relevant industries.
