The Study Of Kripke's Semantics And Reference Theory

Reference is a important content of language philosophy and is the foundation and core of semantics theory. In language philosophy, Reference is closely and directly connected with external object and subject. And the relation of reference(naming) is the key to understand meaning, so the study of reference theory is regarded as the permanent and effective part of Language Philosophy. Modern analytical philosophy takes reference problem as the core of the problem of language and reality. It is in this background, the famous American logician and philosopher Kripke establish his casual and historical reference theory in the basis of semantics, which have make contributions to the development of analytical philosophy and language philosophy. So it is necessary for us to explore the semantic foundation of Kripke'reference theory and the procedure of reference determination in the basis of theoretical comparison. We should retrospect and precisely locate the casual and historical reference theory from a post-modern contextual perspective.This article contains five parts: Preface; Chapter one, two, three; conclusion.In preface, this article generally summarize the important position and theoretical significance of Kripke'reference theory in modern language philosophy, which will not only present a new solution and model for the development of reference theory itself, but also will greatly stimulate the development of scientific realism.In chapter one, this article mainly inspect the semantic background of Kripke'reference theory. Firstly, it analyzes the historical and theoretical background and origin of Kripke'semantics. Then it sum up the semantic's theoretical construction and typical characteristics, analyze the realism's position of possible world, expound the main category and basic concepts. At last, it point out the correlation between the Kripke'semantics and his reference theory.In chapter two, this article studies the Kripke'reference theory from four parts. Firstly, it Summarize the content of Kripke how to criticize descriptive reference theory, then it explores the process of determining name and reference with the help of logical means. Finally it analyze the failure and success between description theory and casual reference theory from its theoretical dilemma. In fact, they are coexist. In chapter three, this article criticize the Kripke's reference theory from contextual perspective: Kripke's realism of reference make contributions to the improvement of scientific realism. Then it analyze the thoughts of Kripke's pragmatic context and point out its faults. At last, it mainly summarize and criticize the absolute reference and intentionality of casual reference theory from post modern contextual perspective.In the end, this article stands at a historical height of reference theory and allege from the background of analytical philosophy. On the one hand, it's difficult for Kripke's reference theory to avoid the historical limitations of absolute dualism. On the other hand, it also considers the importance of historical and social factors for naming and reference. Kripke's reference theory contains some modern contextual thoughts like intentionality and pragmatic thoughts. The context is a necessary way for reference theory.
