The rock painting, as a kind of art work in remote antiquity, is intimately fused with all aspects of primitive culture. This is the essential proof in which the ancient people are expressing themselves and their attitudes towards the world, describing the relationship between human beings and deities, witchcraft and religion, as well as providing abundant pictorial data. The intensive research concerning the rock painting can be helpful in revealing the mentality and thinking patterns of the prehistoric people as well as investigating the origin of the human's art. In this case, we'll have an understanding of the formation of the ancient culture in all aspects, and examine its deep and long-lasting influence on our present-day art creation.This article, researching the primitive rock painting, mainly investigates the cultural connotation and the related features of aesthetics behind the primitive Chinese rock painting in terms of aesthetics and ancient thinking pattern. The body of the paper is divided into 4 parts. First it proceeds to the analysis of the material and thought base of the rock painting, focusing on the concepts of soul, religion and witchcraft. Based on these, it discusses in detail the aesthetic standard of the rock painting, mainly considering iconicity, symbolism and integrity, and it points out that it is the particular social environment of the ancient people and their way of thinking that gave birth to the primitive rock painting.
