The Research On Stephen Owen's Literature History Of Tang Danasty

Stephen Owen,an overseas sinologist,is famous for his study of Chinese classical literature.In this paper,a series of his works about history of Tang Dynasty literature in《The Poetry of Early T'ang》,《The Great Age of Chinese Poetry》,《The End of the Chinese "Middle Ages"一Essays in Mid-Tang Literary Culture》will be taken as research objects,his relevant papers and books will be also concerned.The paper will focus on his researching method for history of Tang Dynasty literature,which will obtain the enlightenment for compiling Chinese literature history.This paper is divided into four parts:Introduction introduces his position in today sinology research,the meaning of his researching Tang Dynasty literature and his academic concept.The first part respectively analyses his three works of Tang Dynasty literature in《The Poetry of Early T'ang》,《The Great Age of Chinese Poetry》,《The End of the Chinese "Middle Ages"一Essays in Mid-Tang Literary Culture》.The part seizes the main features of his works,analyses his angle in describing the history of Tang Dynasty literature,introduces his inconsistencies with traditional literature history,and discuss the defect existing in his research of literature history.The second part introduces his research method and theoretical basis of literature history.This part,through the analysis the features of his works about Tang Dynasty literature history in the first part from the text to the conclusion,gets the research method of his compiling ancient literature history:first is breaking through the constraints for traditional literature history compiling in the concept,constantly reviewing our research habits,"historical imagination" and "the traditional concept of literature".Second is compiling from the start with the small proposition,using the text perusal method of new criticism,getting rid of grand narrative,obtaining individual works.The third part concludes the enlightenment of Yu Wen Suo An for literature history. This part,through comparing his Tang Dynasty literature history with Chinese traditional literature history,analyses the defect existing in Chinese traditional literature history,and makes proposals for the compiling of Chinese literature history hereafter.
