A Study On Academic Research Of Henan Scholar-Zhang Zongtai In Qing Dynasty

Zhang Zongtai, a well-known scholar of Henan in the mid-late period of Qing dynasty, devoted himself to studying the science of history and literature. Being a scholar, he once successively held the posts of instructor in the Huaiqing, Henan government and the teacher of Confucian studies in Xiuwu county. He studied the science of learning with great concentration and put his most energy into "The summary of The Si Ku Quan Shu". His main writings included:"Collection of Luyan's Learning", fifteen volumes, were his reading notes,compilations of preface and postscript gained from his historical records he read extensively. The content were characterized by collecting evidence extensively, commenting on merits and demerits, correcting mistakens and supplymenting new materials; "Outline of Central Region Collection", six volumes,were problem-solving catalogue of local literatures compiled and edited from scholar's writings through the ages he collected everywhere in the Central Region. These two writings provided great significance of reference for the study of later generation's historical records and literatures. The thesis try to take the academic research of Zhang Zongtai as subject, two writings as the version of interpretation, expound the feature and method of Zhang's academic research from two fields of historical science and literature.Zhang was adept in comment and textual research in historical science. In discoursingy history,on the basis of reading extensively historical records of previous great master of history and expressed personal idea for historical rise and decline by means of historical comment. In verifying history, he was conscientious and meticulous by force of profound formal scholarship and self-cultivation in examining and correcting mistakes of historical records. In compiling historical records, he put forward some reasonable suggestions by means of experiences pf participating in the compilation of local records for two times.In the field of literature, Zhang benefited a lot from the study of collation and catalogue. Because of his accurate collation and appropriate method, he was once appreciated by Ruan yuan. His study of catalogue originated from Si Ku.Its precise and proper solution of Chinese characters benefited for later generations'learning, especially the compilation of "Outline of Central Region Collection"provided inportant reference for studying literature of Central Region.Zhang's thought and method in historical learning and literature mainly inherited from traditional historical learning and literature, especially from the scholars in the period of Qian-Jia dynasty. However, in the changeable age of Jia-Dao period, his academic research hadn't been infused the content of new age. In the process of pursuing study, he still regarded the method of textual research as the main means. In the textual research of acient records, he hadn't conducted academic exploration which bore with more realistic significance, giving rise to rigorous academic research and inadequate exploration.
