Botticelli, Rossetti, Modigliani are famous painters for their female portraits in the history of Art. From their works we could not only distinguish similar elements of beauty: smooth lines, soft colors, and lengthened figures, which bring extreme elegance to the women, but also read similar melancholy in their facial expressions and eyes, although they live in three different ages and areas: Botticelli in Italy during high Renaissance, Rossetti in Great Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria, Modigliani in Italy and France at the turn of the 19th and the 20th century where diversity became the main theme in the world of art. Moreover in other forms of art, e.g. literature and music, some artists expressed elegance and melancholy in the works with their understanding as well. For example, the young Dante, one of the representatives of Dolce Stil Novo, portrayed his love Beatrice as a noble and graceful lady. In the field of music, celebrated Polish pianist Chopin presented similar themes and feelings in his Piano works, especially his Nocturnes. This paper sets out to explore this topic and identify its root through analyzing these artists' personal interests and life experiences, social and historical background, cultural origins and so on. Finally it points out its deep influence on and great contribution to the Art history and Art thought (theory).
