| Sun Guoting is a famous calligrapher and calligraphic ideologist of early Tang Dynasty. His Shu Pu is not only a well known and competitive product of calligraphy, but also an important and aesthetics estimable literature of theory. His thoughts of Calligraphy Aesthetics are well illustrated by his work Shu Pu.Sun Guoting was born in a poor family, and not well emphasized because of his humble origin. The academic research about him was little and disordered, and some of the simple research occured in Tang Dynasty and later periods. A lot of scholars did a general research on calligraphy from aesthetic perspective, but they did little research on Shu Pu. Although Shu Pu has a limited volume, it contains an aesthetics estimable literature of thoughts. Systematically and deeply studying its aesthetic view and improving its aesthetic values have a great meaning in calligraphy creation which is directed by Calligraphy Aesthetics, and in development and improvement of Calligraphy Aesthetics as well.In Chapter 1, the author analyzes the written motivation of Sun Guoting according to his life and background. Having learned lessons from the downfall of Sui Dynasty, the ruler of early Tang Dynasty took the policies of rehabilitation and tax reduction, in that period politics was far form corruption, society was peaceful, economy and culture were developing rapidly. Encouraged and initiated by the rulers, calligraphy was developed quickly, so Shu Pu was created as a summarization of early calligraphy. Based on this, the article summarizes the main aesthetic thoughts of Shu Pu in different aspects such as development and essence of calligraphy, similarities and differences, produce and appreciation of calligraphy. On the aspect of development of calligraphy, Sun refuted the viewpoint of "old calligraphy is unvarnished, and modern calligraphy is beautiful" and "restore ancient ways", and proposed the dialectical development viewpoint of "unvarnished calligraphy is changed by times, and beautiful calligraphy is varied by custom" and "inherit the tradition but swim with the tide, innovate but not associate with abuses". As to the essence of calligraphy, he firstly proposed and Stressed the emotional function of calligraphy and also pointed out that calligraphy was a kind of lyric express art, it should "express the sensibilities of writers". On the aspect of font, he proposed the viewpoint of "digest in the meanwhile of emphasizing the individual character". On the aspect of produce of calligraphy, he proposed the viewpoint of "Five Apart and Five Together" On the aspect of appreciation of calligraphy, he attacked the current abuses and proposed that calligraphy should be modern, counteract and of moral integrity. And this is the main contents of Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 I study seriously the aesthetics value of Shu pu and point out its effect on aftertime. As the superb work of art and calligraphy, Shu Pu is of great values in both art and book review. As far as art is concerned, Shu Pu becomes the splendid representation of two Wang's cursive hand and the facsimile of aftertime. As far as review is concerned, Shu Pu has continuously produced effects on essence, development, creation and appreciation of calligraphy till now.The article tries to make a comprehensive summary and systematically expound on Shu Pu from its back grounding, aesthetic view, and value, so that we can find some new academic achievements on aesthetics. |
