Scholar abroad study on A Farewell to Arms and Catch-22 can be termed as defying enumeration.The research on Hemingway's A Farewells to Arms has already displayed the all-direction,the multiple echelons,and many angle situations,mainly concentrated on such aspects as iron image man,tragedy mental consciousness,female image,nihility thought and art characteristic.The research on Catch-22 is also very active,mainly concentrated on black humor,Yossarian individuality analyses,symbol significance analyses,subject analysis.Making a comprehensive survey of academic circles,scholar concentrates on single work research or comparison with other works,without comparison research on Henry and Yossarian.By comparing the similarities and differences of the images of Thierry Henry in A Farewell to Arms to Yossarian in Catch-22,this thesis analyzes the difference between the modern heroism in the 20^th century and the traditional concept of heroism.The main research methods are the method of intensive reading of the text and the method of social—historical criticism.This thesis grasps the relationship between the writers' creation and times as well as historical culture,and between the male protagonists and the society,so as to seek the similarities and differences of Henry and Yossarian,the discrepancies of ethics and philosophy of life between the modern heroism and the traditional concept of heroism represented by them.The paper carries the author's own judgment.This thesis can be divided into three chapters:Chapter one:It mainly analyzes the general characters of Henry and Yossarian. Through the analysis of social environments of the anti-heroes,the paper reveals that the existence of anti-heroes is the result of specific history and social environment as the passage of time.The two protagonists,from the understanding of wars at the beginning of joining the war to the final illusion of the hope and chose to escape became anti-heroes against the cruel war.Chapter two:Describing the differences between Henry and Yossarian.In the same century but different historical periods,they experienced disillusion before the grim reality of war,and ultimately grew into two ardent youth.Their joining the war at the beginning was out of the identification with the society as youth-- patriotism and responsibility.However,Henry and Yossarian saw the so-called real heroes face during the continuous resistance against the war,under the oppression of the reality,and the ridiculous and evil circumstances,full of death threats.They didn't choose the traditional tragic way to pay their own lives,but lived on in degradation,pursuing the value of another life.Faced with frustration and misfortune,Henry struggled arduously but aimlessly.And yet,Yossarian is sober.When he couldn't surmount the absurd world and life dilemma,he didn't give up the freedom of choice in the face of the crazy world,and ultimately reached the negative peace.Chapter three:Comparisons between the traditional heroism and the modern heroism.The traditional heroism is absolute obedience of the individual before the collective or national interest,choosing sacrifice and solemnity.However,the war has changed people's lifestyles and surged against the traditional ethics.It also promotes the change form the traditional heroism to the modern heroism among the Americans.On the other hand,Modern heroism prefers to modern non-rationalism and humanism.The heroes reflected by the American 20th century novels on war,treated the individual survival and fate as the criteria.They had a sober understanding of the world,and dared to oppose the will of the state,negate the war,and accuse the evil of the war.Through comparisons and analysis between the traditional heroism and the modern heroism,this paper affirms that the evolution process of the ancient and modern heroic view is a ever-changing process of philosophy on life and ethics.At the same time,the analysis of Henry and Yossarian lets the world understand that anti-heroes like those two have certain positives.This imperfect way,to express the desire for hopes of the two "heroes",reveals human beings' permanent thinking on their future and interests. However,in the capitalist countries,the struggle between anti-heroes and tyrant social system only ends in failure.
