Study Of Novel Monthly (1948-1949)

Novel Monthly first started in Hong Kong in later 40's of the 20th century, led and influenced by Hong Kong Culture Working Committee of CPC, is one of the most representative left-wing literary journals. The journal chiefly published some works of novel creation, review and translation works. By introducing and highly appraising the literary and art works from Liberated Area and criticizing the wrong trend of thought in art and literature in the KMT-controlled Area, the journal publicized and implemented the spirit of Mao Zedong' Speech at "Yan-an Literature Seminar". The above efforts made preparations for the setting up of new literary system in the aspects of literary theory and creation, therefore the journal played a very important role in the process of "transition" and "reforming" from the late 40's to the 50's in the 20th century. The research on this journal will be helpful to probe into the situation of publication, literary environment in the late 40's and the establishment of the new literary system.The paper consists of four chapters:The first and second chapter mainly discusses such exterior issues as the background of starting the journal, starting process of the journal, property of the journal, existence dilemma the journal faces, and its edition strategies. Through analyzing works published in Novel Monthly, the third and fourth chapter chiefly explicate the following two points of view: the journal facilitates the studies, the publicity and the practice of Mao Zedong' Speech at "Yan-an Literature Seminar"; the journal strives to construct the literary mode of the newly-founded People's Republic of China, with Mao Zedong's thoughts on literature and arts as the core value.
