Interpreters' Competence In Transnational Movie Co-Productions-An Approach Of Assessment Models

Driven by social progress and global democratization, interpreting professionalization and specialization are gradually gathering momentum. With the transnational movie co-production mechanism gaining increasing popularity with movie producers, movie interpreting, as a new type of interpreting, has developed considerably amidst the trend of interpreting professionalization and specialization.Following an examination of the global picture of transnational movie co-productions and its development in China, this thesis will briefly analyze interpreters'role of a mediator of language and culture and the mix of interpreters currently active in domestic movie industry.In this industry, interpreters'competence and qualities on the whole are uneven and varied. To deal with this situation, this thesis will look into how to acquire qualities needed to work as an interpreter based on the assessment models of interpreting and interpreter competence proposed by Wang Binhua (2007:3). Various strategies and coping statistics will be proposed while the thesis sheds some light on the characteristics of interpreting in transnational movie co-productions. For example, interpreters can prepare themselves on terminology to minimize the difficulties in understanding the meaning and producing it in ways more acceptable in the target language due to the large amount of terminology used on movie set; interpreters should increase their sensitivity to cultural differences to perform the role of mediator of language and culture to the best of their abilities.Characteristics of the movie industry determine that it is not a career for everyone. Through her tentative analysis of interpreting in transnational movie co-productions, the author hopes that interpreters with an eye on the career can reach a basic understanding of this industry and improve interpreting and interpreter competence needed to work as a movie interpreter accordingly and finally contribute to desirable improvement of the quality of the interpreter team and the development of China's movie industry.
