| The topic of this thesis concentrates on the C/E translation of public signs in China. Totally, the thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter, the general introduction includes the importance of the public signs in big tourist cities in China and the present state of public signs translation in China.The second chapter, an overview of public signs translation in China, consists of the following parts: the definition, classification and characteristics of public signs and the translation; the similarities and differences between public signs in Chinese and English. In the third chapter, the author points out some typical errors existing in C/E translation of public signs both in linguistic and cultural aspects. On the linguistic level, the errors mainly are dividedly into five parts: Chinese Pinyin, spelling errors, grammatical errors, improperly used words and vague translation. The author pays much more attention to the errors in cultural level which are more liable to be caused by the translators'misunderstanding, diverse language background and lack of the effective regulation on translation.In the fourth chapter, the author suggests that during the process of translation, the translator should obey the coherence and loyalty rules, and advices that in the author's point of view, two techniques may be taken into consideration, one is conversion and recasting, and the other is addition and omission.The last chapter is a brief conclusion of the thesis. |
