After the entry into the 21st century, known as the information age, science and technology have experienced breakthroughs from time to time, not to mention the ever-increasing pace of the updating of knowledge. Under such circumstances, it's of great necessity to deepen the educational reform, to improve the quality of vocational education and to explore the development of vocational education with Chinese characteristics. However, with a late start, higher vocational education in China is subject-oriented. Take Business English for example, courses are systematically arranged according to subjects, leading to the systematic deviation and structural contradiction between the quality of talents and social needs, which, in turn, have seriously affected the quality of Business English majors. Therefore, there's an urgent call for the reform in the course patterns in Business English of higher vocational education in China at present and in the future. In other words, it's to develop a project-based course system in Business English on the basis of job-related activities instead of the subject itself. More specifically, it's to construct a project-based course system under the guideline of vocational skills and job supply, within the framework of structure and process of the job and according to tasks of the job. This paper begins with an overview of the reform in course patterns in higher vocational education, followed by the discussion of current situation and problems in the reform in course patterns in Business English. It then analyzes the drawbacks of subject-oriented course patterns and the conflict between course patterns in higher vocational education and current situation in China. Finally, it tentatively proposes working process oriented course patterns in higher vocational education, together with a case study of project-based course patterns in Business English so as to explore the effectiveness of developing such course patterns.
